An abandoned cart WhatsApp message template is a pre-approved message that reminds a shopper about the checkout they left unfinished, with a link straight back to it. On WhatsApp, a reminder arrives in the same app people use all day, not in a promotions folder, which is why stores in Pakistan and elsewhere use it alongside email. Below are 18 templates you can copy, grouped by tone and purpose, followed by the rules that decide whether they get approved, when to send them, and how to switch them on for Shopify and WooCommerce in ReploChat.
Key takeaways
- Abandoned cart reminders are generally treated by Meta as marketing templates, so they're charged at the marketing rate and need marketing opt-in.
- Send the first reminder 30–60 minutes after the checkout is abandoned. Too early feels pushy; a day later the intent is gone.
- Use the shopper's name, the product and a direct checkout link. Keep the message short.
- Offer a discount only on the second nudge or for high-value carts, so you don't train customers to abandon on purpose.
- In ReploChat, Shopify abandoned checkouts are detected automatically. WooCommerce has no abandoned-cart webhook, so you send carts through the store events API from a cart-recovery plugin.
What makes an abandoned cart message work
- It's personal. "Hi Sana, your Embroidered Lawn 3-Piece is still in your cart" beats "You left something behind".
- It has one action. A single link back to the checkout, not to your homepage.
- It removes the doubt that stopped them. Delivery charges, COD availability, size, returns. A line that answers the usual question converts better than a bigger discount.
- It invites a reply. Many shoppers abandon because they have a question. "Reply here if you need help with sizing" turns a reminder into a sales chat your team can close.
- It respects opt-out. Include a short way to stop messages, such as "Reply STOP to opt out".

Variables are shown as {{1}}, {{2}} and so on, the way Meta templates number them. In ReploChat you map each variable to an order field: customer name, items, total, store name or checkout link. Submit templates in English; you can mix in common Urdu greetings as plain text.

Button versions
Alongside the checkout link in the body, you can add a URL button ("Complete order") that opens your store, and a Quick Reply button such as "I have a question". Buttons look cleaner and are easier to tap. In ReploChat's template editor you can add Quick Reply, URL and Phone buttons, plus an image header showing the product.
Marketing or utility: which category?
Meta's template guidelines treat messages that encourage a purchase, including cart reminders, as marketing. If you submit an abandoned cart template as utility, Meta will usually reclassify it or reject it. That has two consequences:
- Cost. Marketing is generally the highest-priced category. See WhatsApp Business API pricing in Pakistan.
- Consent. You need the shopper's opt-in to receive marketing messages on WhatsApp.
Order confirmations, shipping updates and COD confirmations are utility; cart reminders are not. More on categories in how to get WhatsApp templates approved.
Opt-in for cart reminders
The cleanest way to collect consent is a checkbox at checkout, next to the phone field:
☐ Send me order updates and offers on WhatsApp. You can reply STOP at any time.
Shopify can show a marketing consent option at checkout; WooCommerce stores usually add a checkbox with a plugin. Keep a record of the consent. ReploChat handles the other side: when a customer types STOP (or "unsubscribe", "band karo" and similar), they're marked as opted out and skipped by every campaign and automation, including cart reminders. Our guide to WhatsApp opt-in rules has more examples.
Timing: when to send abandoned cart messages
| Message | When | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| First reminder | 30–60 minutes after abandonment | Catch shoppers who were interrupted |
| Second reminder (optional) | 20–24 hours later | Answer objections or offer an incentive |
| Stop | After two reminders, or the moment they order or reply | Avoid blocks and reports |
Avoid sending at night. If someone abandons at 11 pm, a reminder at midnight is more likely to be ignored or reported than one at 10 am.
Setting up abandoned cart reminders in ReploChat
Shopify
- Go to Integrations and connect your Shopify store with an Admin API access token.
- Create your reminder under WhatsApp Templates as a Marketing template and wait for approval.
- In the store's automations, switch on Abandoned cart, pick the number and template, and map variables: customer name, items, total and the checkout link.
- Set Send after to the delay you want, in minutes (from 5 minutes up to 7 days).
- Use Send test to check how it looks on your phone.
ReploChat receives Shopify's checkout webhooks and schedules one reminder per abandoned checkout. If the shopper completes the order before the reminder is due, it's skipped automatically. Every reminder appears in the shared inbox, so when a shopper replies with a question an agent can pick it up.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce doesn't send an abandoned-cart webhook, so ReploChat can't detect abandoned carts on its own there. Instead, a cart-recovery plugin (or a small custom script) can send the abandoned cart to ReploChat's store events API with an API key, including the checkout link. Order confirmations, COD confirmations, shipped and cancelled messages work from WooCommerce directly; see WooCommerce integration.
A second reminder
The built-in automation sends one reminder per checkout. For a second nudge with a discount, an agent can send a template from the chat, or start a follow-up sequence on the contact; sequences stop automatically when the customer replies.
Mapping variables to order fields
When you switch on the automation in ReploChat, each template variable is mapped to a field from the abandoned checkout. A typical mapping for template 2 above:
| Variable | Field | Example value |
|---|---|---|
| {{1}} | Customer name | Sana |
| {{2}} | Items | Embroidered Lawn 3-Piece × 1 |
| {{3}} | Checkout link (abandoned cart) | https://yourstore.pk/checkouts/… |
You can also map a variable to fixed text, such as your store name or a discount code. If an order field is missing (for example a checkout with no name), the event log shows the reminder as failed with the missing value, so you can adjust the template.
An example sequence for a Shopify fashion store
- 45 minutes after abandonment: the automation sends template 5 ("You can pay cash on delivery…").
- If the shopper replies with a question: the chat appears in the inbox with the Shopify label; an agent or the AI assistant answers from the store's delivery and exchange policy.
- Next day, for carts over a set value: an agent sends template 12 (free delivery code) from the chat.
- If they complete the order: the order confirmation or COD confirmation goes out as a utility template, and no further cart messages are sent.
Measuring results
Track three numbers: how many reminders were delivered, how many were read, and how many checkouts were completed after a reminder. ReploChat's Integrations page shows each event's status, and campaign and template reports show delivered and read rates. Compare recovered order value against the marketing message cost. Measuring ROI of WhatsApp automation walks through the maths.
Mistakes to avoid
- Sending to shoppers who never gave WhatsApp consent.
- Sending three or four reminders. Two is plenty.
- Linking to the homepage instead of the saved checkout.
- Discounting on the first reminder every time.
- Using utility as the category to save money. It will be reclassified or rejected.
- Ignoring replies. A shopper who asks "Is COD available in Multan?" is ready to buy.
FAQ
How do I send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp?
Connect your store to a WhatsApp Business API platform, create an approved marketing template with the checkout link, and switch on the abandoned cart automation with a delay. In ReploChat, Shopify checkouts are detected automatically; WooCommerce carts come in through the store events API.
Is an abandoned cart message marketing or utility on WhatsApp?
Marketing. Meta treats messages that encourage a purchase as marketing, including cart reminders.
When should I send an abandoned cart WhatsApp message?
Around 30–60 minutes after the checkout is abandoned for the first reminder, and optionally a second about a day later. Stop as soon as they buy, reply or opt out.
Can I send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp without the customer's permission?
No. Marketing messages need opt-in. Add a WhatsApp consent checkbox at checkout and honour STOP requests.
Does WooCommerce support WhatsApp abandoned cart reminders?
Not out of the box, because WooCommerce has no abandoned-cart webhook. Use a cart-recovery plugin or script that posts carts to ReploChat's store events API.
Should I offer a discount in an abandoned cart message?
Not on the first reminder. Answer common objections first (COD, delivery time, exchanges) and keep discounts for a second reminder or high-value carts.
